100 years ago, when the first man-eating titans came, people found refuge behind high walls that stopped the giants in their tracks. But when a massive Titan bursts through the defenses, bringing a flood of the giants into what had been the humans' safe zone, their long-held safety is put in jeopardy. Soldier Eren Jaeger vows to kill every Titan after witnessing one of the titans consume his mother during the subsequent devastation. The group of companions he recruits to assist him is humanity's last chance to prevent extinction at the hands of the monsters.

The Wall Maria, Wall Rose, and Wall Sina are three 50-meter-tall walls that  have encircled human settlements for more than a century. The Titans,  enormous humanoids that devour mankind, are kept out by these barriers. Eren  Jaeger compares city life to raising livestock, so he joins the Scout Regiment in order to explore the outside world. The gate to the Shiganshina District, which is on the border of Wall Maria, is abruptly knocked down by an unexpected figure, allowing smaller Titans to get through. Eren and Mikasa race home to find Carla pinned beneath their fallen house as the town descends into widespread fear. Carla begs them to run as a Smiling Titan approaches, but they won't leave until Hannes, a city guard, shows up and promises to protect them. But as he approaches the Titan, he becomes terrified and drags Eren and Mikasa away. Carla is devoured by a Smiling Titan as Eren watches in terror.

The government provides instructions telling the immigrants to either work on the farms or defend Wall Street as a food crisis develops over the course of the following year. About 250,000 people, or 20% of the population, choose to fight, but the Titans wipe them all out. Eren enlists in the military and swears revenge together with Mikasa and Armin. After having trouble balancing, Eren asks Reiner Braun and Bertholdt Hoover for help and discovers that they are also among the few who have actually encountered Titans. Eren tries to balance on the apparatus the next day but fails; nevertheless, Keith understands that Eren's device was defective and accepts him after a second attempt with other equipment.
